Ever since the beginning of human existence, cooperation has been an integral part of survival. For thousands of years, we have hunted for one another, protected our communities, and taken care of our elderly. Cooperation is how humans thrive.


And your latest Python script is no exception.


Studies show that coding as a team has significant positive impacts. In this blog, I'd like to better explore these benefits.


  1. Collaboration reduces programming errors

Naturally, having multiple pairs of eyes examining code makes bug detection more likely. More than just that, however, is the benefit of blending multiple different thought processes and strategies.


When I took AP Computer Science Advanced this year, my teacher often had us teaming up for group quizzes. The general strategy was to have all team members work on the same problem, then read over each answer. We quickly found that discovering errors in others' code was a common occurrence. Most of the time, however, said errors were not found simply by reading one answer top-to-bottom, but rather by comparing the differences in our code. Since each of us interpreted and approached the question differently, finding programming errors became easy through method comparison.


  1. Collaboration encourages creativity

Group work in general boosts the flow of ideas and the feedback loop. When working on a coding project together, a team is much more likely to generate plans by piggybacking off each other. Especially in friendly, productive environments, collaborating can increase excitement and motivation, fostering creative freedom.


This pattern is highly observable in young programmers as well––when put in groups, children are more likely to utilize their imaginations.


It's interesting to think about how coding, as math-y and technical as it may seem, does measures for creative development.


  1. Collaboration is something AI struggles to replace

One interesting article I read recently from Stanford University's AI news page states that artificial intelligence struggles greatly with collaboration, even though it seems like combining many models should increase ability.


Collaboration is the reason behind security for many modern, highly complex coding systems––as explained above, it reduces programming errors and increases optimization. It is a well known fact that AI struggles to make highly reliable systems––it often fails to consider edge cases or misses potential gaps, complimenting Stanford's finding that AI struggles to collaborate.


Though I am optimistic for AI's future in improving efficiency, I do not believe that it should entirely replace humans, especially in coding, where more caution may clearly be necessary. Therefore, to conclude, I'd like to reiterate the importance of being able to cooperate with code. It is a necessary human skill, and one that is still valuable as AI continues to change the field of computer science.



So, hunt for your family, protect your community, take care of your elderly, and work on code all together.
