To All Data Scientists

Updated: Apr 3

Recently, while scrolling through articles on the New York Times, I came across a paper about the creator, Rhayid Ghani, of a nonprofit called "Data Science for Social Good." Curious to know more, I spent some time exploring the nonprofit's page and familiarizing myself with its mission.

Data Science for Social Good (DSSG) is a platform where data and computer scientists can come together and form/build upon a project tackling a specific social concern. One particular project that caught my eye is called "Reducing Crop Burning to Improve Health and the Environment" and was completed in 2022. Its goal was to explore statistical details of the cause of air pollution in major Indian states like Punjab, which is linked to the burning of paddy straw. They categorized tasks into four main groups: Fire detection, biomass/crop detection, crop type classification, and review analysis/results, allowing individuals to specialize in certain types of data collection. Using their findings, they created a marketplace for crop residue and advocated for policy changes in areas with the highest damages.

Volunteers are able to join various projects just like these, making contributions in specific sectors––the existence of which encourages area specialization and efficiency. The process involves data cleaning, analysis, machine learning/modeling, reporting, and more, so it's likely that if you have any background in data or computer science, you can make a positive impact.

So, if you are a scientist interested in making change––whether its in healthcare, the environment, education, or safety––I urge you to check out this nonprofit and consider joining the effort.
